*All Furoshiki wraps use a square of fabric. For small items such as DVDs and books we’d suggest a 50cm square, for bigger gifts such as a bottle of wine or a basket for toiletries, try a 70-75cm square. Very large presents could be wrapped with a square cut using the full width of fabric. If you choose to hem your square, allow an extra 3cm in both directions. If you’re looking for a quicker option, simply cut the square with pinking shears to prevent it fraying too much. If you need help with folding go to furoshiki.com
- Lay a 70cm square of fabric diagonally in front of you. Place the bottle in the centre and tie an overhand knot with the left and right corners, above the cork. Take the loose ends of the knot and twist each one clockwise before tying in a reef knot at the tips to create a carrying handle. Quarter turn the fabric so the untied corners are either side of the bottle. Gather each one loosely and bring halfway up the bottle. Wrap them around the back of the bottle, crossing one over the other, and bring round to the front. Tie together in a tight reef knot to finish.
- Lay a 50cm square of fabric diagonally in front of you. Place the book slightly to the left of the centre and wrap the top and bottom corners of the fabric around it. Take the left and right corners, gather each one loosely and fold over the top of the book. Holding the left corner at the centre, tie the right corner in an overhand knot around it so the fabric can be tightened by pulling the left corner.
DVD pair wrap
- Place two DVDs in the centre of a diagonally placed 50cm fabric square, spine to spine with a 2cm gap between them. Wrap the left and right corners of the fabric over them, tucking the points underneath. Take the top and bottom corners and cross them over in the middle so the ends extend from the main wrap. Fold one DVD over the other, take the protruding corners, pull and tie together in a reef knot on the outside of the wrapping.
- Take a small basket or empty ice cream tub, and place in the centre of a diagonally placed 70cm square. Bring the top and bottom corners up over the long sides of the basket and tuck down into the base, folding under excess fabric if necessary so the bottom of the baskets is completely covered. Gather up the left and right corners and tie an overhand knot in each side, as close as possible to the top of the basket. Twist each length of excess fabric clockwise, bring to the centre and tie in a reef knot to make a handle.
