Make Chalkboard Plates

Turn plates with pretty borders into a handy chalkboard notice set for your kitchen. It couldn’t be simpler and they’d make a really wonderful wall display in the hub of your home.

  • Make Chalkboard Plates
You'll Need:
    • Vintage plates
    • Craft knife
    • Masking tape
    • Chalkboard paint, Rust-Oleum
    • Bullet point pen, Posca
    • Ribbon
    • Duct tape
    1. Wash and dry a plate with a decorative border print. Fix masking tape around the edge of the plate in short overlapping sections, completely covering the border. Take a smaller plate and position it face-down in the middle. Hold in place firmly and use a craft knife to cut around the circle.

    2. Remove the plate and strips of tape to leave a perfectly circular mask. Spray the centre with chalkboard paint. Leave to touch dry before spraying a second coat in the opposite direction to the first for even coverage.

    3. Allow paint to dry completely before peeling masking tape away from plate. Soften the hard line of the blackboard if desired by adding rows of tiny paint dots around the edge with a bullet tip pen in a coordinating colour.

    4. Cut a length of matching ribbon and tie a large bow in the centre. Fix the ends of the ribbon to the back of the plate with a couple of strips of duct tape.
