Crochet pretty edgings for your tea towels

Taking our lead from this issue’s laundry special on p13, Lynne Rowe has devised a nifty way to upcycle plain tea towels into crafty masterpieces – and on the cheap, too! Using just one £2.69 50g ball of yarn per strip of edging, you could create this set of three for just a shade over £8. Packaged up with a simple grosgrain ribbon and some homemade handwash, this little bundle could be the perfect housewarming gift or to welcome a new arrival. Because, let’s face it, you can never have too many tea towels!

    • Katia Cotton Mississippi 3: Magenta, Cornflower Blue, Lavender

    • 3.5mm hook

    • White linen tea towels, 50cm x 70cm

    • Darning needle

    • Sewing needle and thread

Magenta

Take a 1.5m length of yarn and carefully split the four strands into two and use it to work an evenly-spaced blanket stitch edging across one short end of the tea towel, using the stitched hem as a guide to work along (this keeps the stitches the same length).

    1. Row 1: Using 3.5mm hook, make a slipknot with Magenta. Hold the tea towel with RS facing and blanket stitched edge uppermost. Join the yarn with a sl st to rightmost blanket stitch and work 109 tr evenly along the blanket stitch loops. (109 sts). Turn.

    2. Row 2: 4ch (counts as 1tr, 1ch), *miss next st, 1tr into next st, 1ch, rep from * to the end, working last tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

    3. Row 3: 3ch (counts as 1tr), *1tr into next 1ch space, 1tr into next tr, rep from * to last tr, 1tr into next space, 1tr into third of 4ch. (109 sts). Turn.

    4. Row 4: Rep Row 2.

    5. Row 5: Rep Row 3.

    6. Row 6: *3ch, miss next 3 sts, 1sl st into next st, rep from * to end, working last sl st into top of 3ch. Ch1, turn.

    7. Row 7: *(1dc, 1htr, 1tr, 3ch, sl st into 3rd ch from hook (picot made), 1tr, 1htr, 1dc) all into first 3ch space, rep from * into every 3ch space to the end. Cut yarn and fasten off. Repeat all instructions for second edge.

Cornflower blue

Repeat all instructions as given for Magenta tea towel edging from beginning to the end of Row 2, using Cornflower Blue yarn.

    1. Row 3: 4ch (counts as 1tr, 1ch), *1tr into next tr, 1ch, rep from * to the first 4ch of previous row, 1tr into next space, 1tr into third of 4ch. Turn. Rep Row 3.

    2. Row 5: 3ch (counts as 1tr), *1tr into next 1ch space, 1tr into next tr, rep from * to last tr, 1tr into next space, 1tr into third of 4ch.

    3. Row 6: *3ch, miss next 3 sts, 1sl st into next st, rep from * to end, working last sl st into top of 3ch. Ch1, turn.

    4. Row 7: 3ch, 2tr into first 3ch space, *sl st into next 3ch space, 3ch, 3tr into same 3ch space, rep from * to the end, sl st into same 3ch space, cut yarn and fasten off.

Lavender

Using 3.5mm hook and Lavender, make 4ch.

    1. Row 1: (2tr,1ch, 3tr) all into fourth ch from hook, ch5, turn.

    2. Row 2: (3tr,1ch, 3tr) all into next 1- ch space, ch1, turn.

    3. Row 3: Miss first tr, sl st into each of the next 2tr, sl st into 1-ch space, ch3 (counts as 1tr), (2tr, 1ch, 3tr) all into same 1-ch space, ch2, miss next 2tr, 1tr into next tr, ch2, 1tr into third of 5ch, ch5, turn.

    4. Row 4: Miss first tr (at base of 5- ch), [1tr into next tr, ch2] twice, miss next 2tr, (3tr, 1ch, 3tr) into next 1-ch space, ch1, turn.

    5. Row 5: Miss first tr, sl st into each of the next 2tr, sl st into 1-ch space, ch3 (counts as 1tr), (2tr, 1ch, 3tr) all into same 1-ch space, ch2, miss next 2tr, 1tr into next tr, [ch2, 1tr into next tr] twice, ch3, 1tr into third of 5ch, turn.

    6. Row 6: Miss first tr, (1tr into next tr, ch 2] 4 times, miss next 2tr, (3tr, 1ch, 3tr) all into next 1-ch space, ch1, turn.

    7. Row 7: Miss first tr, sl st into each of the next 2tr, sl st into 1-ch space, ch3 (counts as 1tr), (2tr, 1ch, 3tr) all into same 1-ch space, ch5, turn.

Rep Rows 2-7 five times more but on last repeat do not ch5. Instead turn and work around the zig-zag edge as follows: Sl st across to first 5-ch space then work (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) into every 5-ch space, (1htr, 1tr, 2ch, 1tr, 1htr, 1dc) into each point and sl st across each of the tr groups in between the zig zags. Cut yarn and fasten off.

TO FINISH

Lightly steam edging, pin to tea towel edge and stitch in place with white thread. Repeat all instructions for second edge.
