Crochet a granny square wall tidy

we love a good granny square. Editor Lizzie uses one as a coaster, deputy ed Natalie has a string of them along her desk, and our new editorial assistant has a cute cushion on her chair! So when this granny square wall tidy found its way into the Homemaker office, we were all itching to get our hands on it. Naturally, we agreed to share it and it now hangs pride of place on our wall – we each got a pocket!

You’ll need:
    • 4.5mm hook

    • 1 x pair 10mm bamboo

    • knitting needles

    • Rico Design Creative Cotton Aran, 100% cotton, 50g/85m: 3 x Vanilla 062 (A); 1 x Orange 074 (B); 1 x White 080 (C)

    • 3 x medium buttons in contrast

    • colours

    • Sewing needle and thread

ABBREVIATIONS:
    • ch: chain

    • st(s): stitches

    • dc: double crochet

    • dtr: double treble crochet

    • htr: half treble crochet

    • tr: treble crochet

    • sl st: slip stitch

Wall tidy

    Using 4.5mm hook and Yarn A, make 32ch.

    1. Row 1: (RS): 1dc into2nd ch from hook, 1 dc into every st to the end. (31 sts). Ch1, turn (this is the turning ch and is not counted as a stitch on any row).

    2. Row 2: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn.

    3. Rows 3-8: rep Row 2.

    4. Row 9: fold foundation chain edge up against the back of the working row and align foundation ch sts with working row. Join the foundation ch edge by working 1dc into every st on working row and also into corresponding st of foundation row. This forms a channel for the knitting needle.

    Next, rep Row 2 until tidy measures 67cm from lower edge. Cut yarn and fasten off.

JOINING FRONT AND BACK

    Using Yarn B, make 4ch, join into a loop with a sl st into 4th ch from hook. Work Round 1 into the centre of the loop. Alternatively, make a magic loop and work Round 1 into the magic loop.

    1. Rnd 1: 3ch, 15tr into loop, join with a sl st to the 3rd of first 3ch. Cut yarn and fasten off. (16 sts).

    2. Rnd 2: Join Yarn A with a sl st to any tr, 1 puff stitch into same st, 1ch, [1 puff stitch into next st, 1ch] 15 times, sl st into top of first puff st. (16 puff stitch and 16 1ch-spaces). Cut yarn and fasten off.

    3. Rnd 3: Join Yarn C with a sl st to any 1ch-space, 1 beginning cluster into same space, 2ch, [1 full cluster into next 1-ch space, 2ch] to the end, join with a sl st into top of beginning cluster. (16 cluster and 16 2ch-space). Cut yarn and fasten off.

    4. Rnd 4: Join Yarn B with a sl st to any 2ch space, (4ch 2dtr 2ch 3dtr) into same 2ch space, [3tr into next 2ch space] 3 times, *(3dtr, 2ch 3dtr) into next 2ch space, [3tr into next 2ch space]3 times, rep from * twice more, join with a sl st to 4th of first 4ch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    5. Rnd 5: Join Yarn A with a sl st to any 2ch corner space, 1ch (doesn’t count as a st), 5dc into same corner space, *1dc into each of the next 15 sts, 5dc into next corner space, rep from *3 times more, join with a sl st to first dc. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    6. Rnd 6: Join Yarn B with a sl st to the centre stitch of any corner group of 5dc, 2ch (counts as 1htr), 4htr into same stitch, *1htr into each of the next 19 sts, 5htr into next st, rep from *3 times more, join with a sl st to 2nd of first 2ch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    7. Rnd 7: Join Yarn C with a sl st to the centre stitch of any corner group of 5htr, 1ch (doesn’t count as a st), 5dc into same stitch, *1dc into each of the next 23 sts, 5dc into next st, rep from *3 times more, join with a sl st to first dc. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    8. Rnd 8: Join Yarn B with a sl st to the centre stitch of any corner group of 5dc, 2ch (counts as 1htr), 2htr into same stitch, *1htr into each of the next 27 sts, 3htr into next st, rep from *3 times more, join with a sl st to 2nd of first 2ch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    9. Rnd 9: Join Yarn A with a sl st to the centre stitch of any corner group of 3htr, 1ch (doesn’t count as a st), 3dc into same stitch, *1dc into each of the next 29 sts, 3dc into next st, rep from *3 times more, join with a sl st to first dc. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    Make a second pocket following all instructions above then make a third pocket using Yarn B in place of Yarn C and Yarn C in place of Yarn B.

TOP HANGING LOOPS:

    RIGHT LOOP

    1. Row 1: With RS of Tidy facing, make a slip knot onto hook with Yarn C and join yarn with a dc to the top right stitch (counts a first dc), 1dc into each of the next 7 sts. (8 sts in total), ch1, turn.

    2. Row 2: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn. (8 sts) Rep Row 2 14 times more. Cut yarn and fasten off

    LEFT LOOP

    1. Row 1: With RS of Tidy facing, make a slip knot onto hook with Yarn C and join yarn with a dc to the 8th stitch from the top left corner (counts a first dc), 1dc into each of the next 7 sts. (8 sts in total), ch1, turn.

    2. Row 2: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn. (8 sts) Rep Row 2 14 times more. Cut yarn and fasten off

    CENTRE LOOP:

    1. Row 1: With RS of Tidy facing, make a slip knot onto hook with Yarn B and join yarn with a dc to the 5th stitch along from the end of the Right loop (counts a first dc), 1dc into each of the next 6 sts. (7 sts in total), ch1, turn.

    2. Row 2: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn. (7 sts) Rep Row 2 14 times more. Cut yarn and fasten off

MAKING UP
    • Weave all loose ends of yarn into WS of work and trim.
    • Weave all loose ends of yarn into WS of work and trim.

    • Fold hangers to front and stitch to top of tidy. Stitch a button to the centre front of each hanger.

    • Space the 3 pockets evenly on the Tidy and stitch in place using Yarn A.

    • Slide 10mm knitting needles through top hangers and bottom channel.

    • Make a braided cord approximately 40cm long. Tie both ends around the top needle.

SPECIAL STITCHES:
    1. Puff Stitch: yoh, insert hook into stitch, yoh draw hook back through stitch (3 loops on hook), rep from * twice more (7 loops on hook), yoh draw through all 7 loops. 1 puff stitch made.

    2. Beginning Cluster: 2ch, *yoh, insert hook into stitch, yoh draw hook back through stitch, yoh draw through first 2 loops (2 loops left on hook) rep from * once more (3 loops left on hook), yoh and draw through all 3 loops.

    3. Full Cluster: *yoh, insert hook into stitch, yoh draw hook back through stitch, yoh draw through first 2 loops (2 loops on hook) rep from * twice more (4 loops left on hook), yoh and draw through all 4 loops.
