Bonus Project: Crochet Mug Cosies

Why stop at tea cosies? Crochet these adorable mug cosies for the perfect finishing touch to your homemade hot chocolate party, featured in issue 23.

YOU’LL NEED:
    • 3.75mm hook
    • 3.0mm hook (for flowers)
    • 6 mugs 25-26 cm diameter and 9.5 cm high (argos product code 801/2739)
    • 6 assorted natural buttons
    • Wool needle
ABBREVIATIONS:
    • ch(s): chain(s)
    • dc: double crochet
    • sl st: slip stitch
    • st(s): stitch(es)
    • MB: Make Bobble as follows: yarn over hook, insert hook into next st, yarn over hook, pull back through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops left on hook), *yarn over hook insert hook into same st, yarn over hook, pull back through stitch, yarn over hook pull through first 2 loops on hook (3 loops left on hook), rep from * twice more (5 loops left on hook), yarn over hook and pull through all 5 loops to complete bobble.
PLAIN MUG COSIES:

    Right-sided close:

    • Rnd 1: Using Yarn A and 3.5mm hook make 44 ch. Taking care not to twist your ch, join into first ch with a dc (this counts as first dc), 1dc into remaining 43 ch, join into first dc with a sl st, turn (do not ch1) and slightly lengthen the loop on hook . (44 sts).

    • Rnd 2: 1dc into sl st just made, 1dc into each of the remaining 43 sts, join with a sl st to first dc, turn (do not ch1). Slightly lengthen the loop on hook.

    Sides:

    • Row 1 (RS): sl st into sl st just made, sl st into next dc, ch1 (doesn’t count as a st), 1dc into each of the next 41 sts, ch1, turn (leaving remaining sts unworked). (41 sts). Now work on these 41 sts only.

    • Rows 2-14: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn.

    • Row 15: 1dc into each of the next 40 sts, 18ch, sl st into same st (button loop made), 1dc into last st, ch1, turn.

    • Row 16: 1dc into every st (making sure button loop is at the front), turn (do not ch1).

    • Row 17: miss first dc, 1dc into each of the remaining sts. Cut yarn and fast off. Weave ends into WS and trim. Stitch button to the front of the cosy, opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from both top and side edges.

    Left-sided close:

    Using Yarn B, follow all instructions for plain right-sided mug cosy up to the end of Row 14.

    • Row 15: 1dc into each of the first 2 sts, 18ch, sl st into same st (button loop made), 1dc into every st to the end, ch1, turn.

    • Row 16: 1dc into every st (making sure button loop is at the front), ch1, turn.

    • Row 17: 1dc into every st to last st, sl st into last st. Cut yarn and fast off. Weave ends in. Stitch button to the front of the cosy opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from the edges.

FLOWER:

    Using 3.0mm hook and Yarn C, make a magic loop and work Round 1 into the loop then pull tail end of yarn to close the loop. Or, make 2ch and work Round 1 stitches into the first of the 2 ch.

    • Rnd 1: 10dc into the loop, sl st into 1st dc.

    • Rnd 2: [3tr into next st, sl st into next st] 5 times, working last sl st into first sl st, cut yarn and fasten off. Weave yarn ends into WS and trim. Make a small knot in the centre of a short length of Yarn B and thread through centre of flower, leaving knot on the front. Stitch flower to mug cosy then thread a length of Yarn C from flower to the top of the cosy. Weave yarn ends into WS and trim.

2-COLOUR COSIES:

    Right Sided Close:

    Follow all instructions for right handed mug cosy using Yarn D to the end of Side Row 4 and Yarn C for Rows 5-17. Weave ends in. Stitch button to the front of the cosy opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from the edges.

    Left Sided Close:

    Follow all instructions for left handed mug cosy using Yarn B to the end of Side Row 4 and Yarn C for Rows 5-17. Weave ends in. Stitch button to the front of the cosy opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from the edges.

BOBBLE COSIES:

    Right Sided Close:

    Using Yarn A, follow all instructions for plain right-handed mug cosy to the end of Side Row 5, ch1, turn.

    • Row 6: 2dc, MB, [5dc, MB] 6 times, 2dc, changing to Yarn C during the last dc, ch1, turn. Cut Yarn A.

    • Row 7: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn.

    • Row 8: Rep Row 2, changing to Yarn D during the last dc, ch1, turn. Cut Yarn C.

    • Row 9: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn.

    • Row 10: Rep Row 2 and continue in Yarn D.

    • Rows 11-14: 1dc into every st.

    Follow instructions for plain right-sided mug cosy from Row 15 to the end. Cut yarn and fast off. Weave ends into WS and trim. Stitch button to the front of the cosy opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from the edges.

    Left Sided Close:

    Using Yarn B, follow all instructions for plain right-handed mug cosy to the end of Side Row 5, ch1, turn.

    • Row 6: 2dc, MB, [5dc, MB] 6 times, 2dc, changing to Yarn C during the last dc, ch1, turn. Cut Yarn B.

    • Row 7: 1dc into every st.

    • Row 8: Rep Row 2, changing to Yarn D during the last dc, ch1, turn. Cut Yarn C.

    • Row 9: 1dc into every st, ch1, turn.

    • Row 10: Rep Row 2 and continue in Yarn D.

    • Rows 11-14: 1dc into every st.

    Follow instructions for plain left-sided mug cosy from Row 15 to the end. Cut yarn and fast off. Weave ends into WS and trim. Stitch button to the opening opposite the loop, approximately 2cm in from the edges.
