We spoke to one of the makers from All By Mama, a website that features beautiful gifts all made by mums. Based around busy mothers working hard to run their businesses around the joys and demands of family life and run by a mother and daughter duo, All By Mama aims to encourage and inspire mums everywhere to follow their creative dreams. Hear from featured Mama Emma Allard below:

We meet a mama maker from All By Mama

“I’ve always been quite arty, but since becoming a mum my passion for getting creative has increased dramatically! Although life with a small child can be hard work, I’ve found it’s given me plenty of time to slow down and think about what is important in life; plenty of my ideas and dreams have arisen while I’ve been sitting in bed nursing my son.

I now sell handmade cushions, tea towels, and greeting cards all featuring my own designs. I was looking for a way to combine my skills in both painting and sewing when I discovered digital printing. Unlike other methods like screen printing, you can print unlimited colours and complicated designs straight onto fabric. Although investing in my own digital fabric printer is a bit out of my reach for now, there are plenty of companies out there that can do it for you. I use watercolours to paint initial sketches that I scan and use to create digital repeating patterns. I then get these printed onto fabric that I make my products from. Hence all my cushions and tea towels are unique works of art in themselves!

I’m inspired by the coast and the world around me, and like to create designs that are simple, fun and colourful, and let the effects of the watercolour paints show through. My current designs include vintage caravans, starfish and sailboats. Future designs I’m working on include mushrooms, windmills, acorns and trees, and I’d like to broaden my range to include things like quilts, stationary and perhaps even unisex children’s t-shirts.

Finding time to create isn’t easy with a toddler, but it’s important to make time for things you love no matter what. I make the most of naptimes and evenings after my son’s bedtime by having all my supplies set up and ready to go. In the early days I did a lot of creating with my son in a baby carrier. I also have a very supportive partner who helps out a lot with housework and keeping our son entertained!”
