With so much to plan, make and do and Christmas fast approaching, the Winter months can prove a stressful time for a lot of us. Today, Wednesday 4th November 2015, is National Stress Awareness Day and it’s the perfect time to focus on your own well-being and de-stress before the festive season kicks in. Craft is the perfect way to achieve this peaceful, mindful attitude, so here are some great makes you can master.

Mark National Stress Awareness Day By Crafting This November

Unfortunately stress is a familiar feeling for many - the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) say, “everyday we have a set of pressures, commitments and demands to juggle and for so many of us, we find ourselves where we feel overwhelmed”. They encourage us to practice self-care for our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness, and crafting is the perfect way to do this.

Though it can be hard to make time in our packed schedules for ourselves, working on a project or even just settling down for an hour with a craft is a proven way to help combat stress. The Craft Yarn Council surveyed hundreds of thousands of knitters and crocheters about why they enjoy these crafts, and ‘stress relief’ and ‘fulfilment’ were the top two reasons. There are close links between knitting and meditation, with studies finding that frequent knitters were happier and less anxious. Taking some time out to do something you love and focussing your thoughts is so beneficial, and it will decrease your stress levels, boost your mood and you’ll enjoy a sense of achievement - it’s a win-win!

You don’t need to choose a complicated or difficult project - something as simple as sitting down with an adult colouring-in book can you teach you mindful practices (a topic we’ll be covering in our January issue!). In the meantime, try your hand at these fab, and most importantly, simple, makes!
