We get some cushion crafting expertise from Anne Baxter of Justhands-on.tv, and discover wonderful ways to experiment with them. “I’ve sewn all my life, prolifically for the last 25 years, and there’s always room for another cushion. With a wealth of patchwork and appliqué techniques and designs to try, a cushion is a manageable size and a marvellous vehicle to experiment with.”

“Quilts are my first love, but inevitably they take time to complete, whereas a cushion is a much quicker project to tackle, and the satisfaction that comes with having made something never fails to thrill me. It is an immensely pleasing thing to do and it amazes me how many people have never made a thing! You can’t beat a handmade gift and a cushion fits the bill perfectly, especially as a variety of different shapes and sizes of pads are available these days (I always buy feather), and this can sometimes help you with your design. A long slim rectangular shape is an ideal shape for a leaping hare or a dachshund!”

“Just recently a friend was bemoaning the fact that her sitting room was boringly beige and announced her plan to make a cushion in an assortment of reds to liven things up and be a feature. It’s worked a treat – one small item can make all the difference. I’m also a huge fan of a seasonal cushion – especially Christmas ones. My house is littered with a selection of festive cushions in December, some old favourites and the odd new one, and friends and family always find one propped on their beds when they come and stay. Bringing them out each year is like being reacquainted with old friends!”

“If you’ve never made a thing in your life, a simple cushion is a great place to start, and an accomplished stitcher can always try a new technique like an Oxford flap or a bound edge (so much easier than piping!). I shall carry on making cushions – there’s always another idea to try, just around the corner.”

Happy sewing! Anne Baxter
